What is UKCA Marking?
UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is the UK’s product conformity marking introduced following Brexit for products placed on the Great Britain market. It replaced CE marking as the primary conformity mark for Great Britain and indicates that a product meets applicable UK health, safety, and environmental protection requirements. UKCA marking is governed by UK legislation and is recognised only in Great Britain — it is not accepted as a conformity mark in the EU or Northern Ireland.
Why It Matters
Since the UK’s departure from the EU, CE marking can no longer be automatically relied upon to access the Great Britain market. UKCA marking represents the UK’s own declaration of conformity framework, and for many regulated product categories, it is now required before a product can be lawfully placed on the Great Britain market.
For non-UK manufacturers, UKCA marking obligations are closely linked to the requirement to appoint a UK Responsible Person — a UK-established entity who can act on the manufacturer’s behalf for regulatory compliance obligations in Great Britain. Without the correct marking and a designated UK Responsible Person where required, market access in Great Britain may not be achievable.
For manufacturers, importers, and distributors selling into Great Britain, understanding UKCA marking requirements is essential for maintaining lawful market access following Brexit.
Key Requirements
Which Products Require UKCA Marking?
UKCA marking is required for products falling within the scope of specific UK legislation, covering many of the same product categories as CE marking, including:
- Electrical and electronic equipment
- Machinery and industrial equipment
- Personal protective equipment
- Toys and children’s products
- Construction products
- Medical devices under MHRA regulation
This requirement applies under UK legislation that mirrors many of the EU directives and regulations previously applicable before Brexit. Manufacturers should confirm whether their specific product category requires UKCA marking and under which UK regulation.
Responsibilities Relating to UKCA Marking
While specific obligations depend on the product category and applicable UK legislation, responsibilities commonly include:
- Identifying all applicable UK legislation and requirements for the product
- Completing the required conformity assessment procedure, including Approved Body involvement where mandatory
- Compiling and maintaining technical documentation demonstrating compliance with UK requirements
- Drawing up a UK Declaration of Conformity
- Affixing the UKCA mark to the product, packaging, or accompanying documentation in accordance with the applicable regulation
- Appointing a UK Responsible Person if the manufacturer is established outside the UK
UKCA Marking vs. CE Marking
UKCA marking and CE marking are equivalent in purpose but operate under entirely separate regulatory frameworks. CE marking provides access to the EU market, while UKCA marking provides access to the Great Britain market. The two marks are not interchangeable — a CE marked product does not automatically meet UKCA requirements, and vice versa.
Manufacturers selling in both markets must meet the requirements of each framework independently, including maintaining separate technical documentation, declarations of conformity, and appointed representatives for each market where required.
